"Art helps me with my emotions and helps me focus on something else, other than what I’m going through."
Kaylyn W.
As we usher in the summer season, we are pleased to showcase artwork influenced by the creative talent of our featured artist, 17-year-old Kaylyn. Kaylyn's remarkable resilience in the face of adversity has been shaped by her diagnosis of Leukemia at age 12. The news of her illness was delivered abruptly during a festive Christmas gathering at her school, prompting her immediate admission to the MD Anderson Children's Cancer Hospital for testing. Since her diagnosis, Kaylyn has undergone rigorous treatment and chemotherapy. She is currently engaged in physical therapy to manage the side effects of her treatment regimen and other prescribed medications.
While in the hospital, she has consistently taken part in the Children's Art Project, expressing a fondness for creating art. “Art helps me with my emotions and helps me focus on something else, other than what I’m going through.” Kaylyn says. To Kaylyn, art serves as a therapeutic outlet, imbuing her with a sense of serenity while simultaneously delighting her. Her preferred mediums are painting and drawing, with watercolors holding a special place in her heart.
Kaylyn is a homeschooled student. To alleviate stress, she finds solace in baking which brings her immense joy. She doesn’t insist on mapping out every aspect of her future but prefers to embrace the spontaneity that life offers and allowing events to unfold naturally.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of Children's Art Project. Each month, we’ll provide updates, promote survivorship, and share uplifting stories about what makes Children’s Art Project special.
